About this ebook

Ernest Maltravers is driven to the edge of despair by betrayal, politics, and the collapse of his hopes, while Lady Florence Lascelles lies dying after a cruel misunderstanding has poisoned their love. As guilt, jealousy, and confession spread through the story, Lumley Ferrers is drawn into another household crisis when Lord Vargrave is struck down by a fatal fit, setting the stage for a last, astonishing act of family duty and inheritance. At Florence's bedside, grief becomes tenderness. Maltravers discovers the truth of the deception that divided them, and Cesarini's forged letter, born of envy and hatred, is laid bare. Yet revenge must wait, for Florence's failing strength matters more than vengeance, and their reunion turns from anguish to forgiveness, with love surviving even as death approaches. In their final conversations, they speak not only of remorse but of faith, reunion, and a future beyond the grave, where love and existence continue in higher service. Against the chill of winter, political ambition, social triumph, and worldly vanity fade, leaving devotion, repentance, and spiritual hope at the heart of the drama. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edward Bulwer-Lytton, later Baron Lytton, was a prolific Victorian novelist, poet, dramatist, and politician whose career helped define the literary tastes of the nineteenth century. Born in 1803 into an aristocratic family, he was educated at Cambridge and entered public life as well as letters, moving with unusual ease between Parliament, journalism, and the literary marketplace. Over a long and remarkably productive career, he became one of the most widely read writers of his age, admired for his command of suspense, social observation, melodrama, and historical imagination. His fiction often explores ambition, love, moral struggle, class tension, and the shaping force of fate, while his concern with education, reform, and self-making gives his work a distinctly modern edge. Though some of his style reflects the grandeur of Victorian prose, his stories remain compelling for their energy, psychological drama, and lively engagement with the pressures of society on individual character. Bulwer-Lytton's legacy endures not only in his influence on popular fiction and the historical novel, but also in the way he helped make literature a forum for debate about power, identity, and social change. Readers who enjoy richly plotted novels, moral complexity, and the atmosphere of classic nineteenth-century storytelling will find much to admire in his work.
