About this ebook

The humans are fighting again. Go figure.

As a free A.I., Mal finds the war between the modded and augmented Federals and the puritanical Humanists about as interesting as a battle between rival anthills. He’s not above scouting the battlefield for salvage, though, and when the Humanists abruptly cut off access to infospace he finds himself trapped in the body of a cyborg mercenary, and responsible for the safety of the modded girl she died protecting.

A dark comedy wrapped in a techno thriller’s skin, Mal Goes to War provides a satirical take on war, artificial intelligence, and what it really means to be human.

Having read Mickey7 and Antimatter Blues, I had very high hopes for this book. Ashton absolutely delivered. It's short, but as per usual, it didn't take much time to fall in love with all of the characters here. The humor adds so much to the experience, but doesn't get in the way of the more serious moments. As someone in cybersecurity with a massive distaste for AI, AI stories, and bad hacking in media, somehow he made it all very palatable. I loved how the hacks were represented. By not getting bogged down in buzzwords, he avoided some major eyerolls. I will always be on the lookout for what's next, I genuinely cannot wait to see what else Ashton comes up with.

About the author

Edward Ashton is the author of the novels Three Days in April, The End of Ordinary, Mickey7, and Antimatter Blues, as well as of short stories which have appeared in venues ranging from the newsletter of an Italian sausage company to Escape Pod, Analog, and Fireside Fiction. He lives in upstate New York in a cabin in the woods (not that cabin in the woods) with his wife, a variable number of daughters, and an adorably mopey dog named Max.
