In Educational Freedom in Eastern Europe, Charles Glenn points out that parents in the ex-Communist countries are being granted more educational freedom than American parents. Not only can they freely choose nongovernment schools but they can also work with others to create new independent schools; Glenn estimates that over 1,000 such schools now receive public funding, in Poland, Russia, Hungary, and other post-Communist nations. This book tells the story of how the Communists turned the schools of Russia, the Baltic nations, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania into instruments of totalitarian indoctrination - the history that scholars in Central and Eastern Europe couldn't write for so many years. Drawing on information provided by dozens of education reformers in the former Soviet empire, it then goes on to the happier story of how the demand for educational freedom began making itself felt, and how educational freedom has flourished in the budding civil societies of the post-Communist era.
