When her young cousin Mattie comes to stay on their New England farm, Frome falls in love with her. But the social conventions of the day doom their love and their hopes. The story forcefully conveys Wharton's abhorrence of society's unbending standards of loyalty. This book was a complete waste of my time. I had to read it for school and it was just horrible. It's a sappy love story with a stupid ending. If anyone who reads this review is considering reading Ethan Frome, don't. It isn't worth it.

The book is relatively slow in the beginning. But, it truly is a tragic romantic novel. Even after the "incident" The love between the characters is still longing. Impairments never stop true love.

A puzzling tale. A story about wretchedness and redemption and tainted love. You won't be sure who to hope and cheer for in this novel.
