Space opera comes alive in this masterful, retro sci-fi thriller. After a failed kidnapping attempt on his wife, Richard Seaton realizes that Earth might not be the safest place for them. Along with Martin Crane and his wife, the Seatons take to the cosmos in their trusty space-cruiser Skylark II, built by their alien allies, the Osnomians.
But all is not well among the stars. A race of advanced and evil beings, convinced they are the highest form of life in the universe, has set out to destroy every other civilization. Seaton has only one option: To achieve peace, he must go to war. And while they embark on an intergalactic tour to rally other extraterrestrials to their cause—from porpoise people to ancient scientists—the Seatons siphon knowledge from the greatest minds in the universe. Their discoveries and inventions will help build a vessel unlike any other in existence: the Skylark III.
Prepare for takeoff.
"A marvelous epic of science fiction." — Galaxy
E. E. "Doc" Smith (1890–1965) was an American science fiction author, often credited as the father of the space opera genre. Smith worked as a chemist and food engineer until a friend suggested that he use his speculations about interstellar travel to write a novel. His first book, The Skylark of Space, was initially rejected by many book publishers and magazines before being serialized in Amazing Stories magazine, where it met with huge success. He spent the ensuing four decades writing novels and stories and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2004.
