About this ebook

The air hung crisp and cool, the kind of autumn day that begged for adventure. Sunlight dappled through the vibrant canopy of reds, oranges, and yellows, painting the forest floor in a mosaic of warm hues. Karen, her cheeks flushed with excitement, turned to Doug, her eyes sparkling.

“Doug, what a perfect day for a short hike!” she exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly in the stillness of the woods. “Just enough time to stretch our legs and enjoy the scenery before the days get too short.”

Doug, ever the pragmatist, scanned the horizon, a hint of apprehension in his usually cheerful eyes. “It sure is,” he replied, adjusting the straps of his backpack. “But we better get going now. Sun sets early this time of year, and you know what they say… the boogie man comes out when the shadows get long.” He punctuated his words with a playful nudge, trying to lighten the mood.

Karen laughed, swatting his arm. "Don't be such a scaredy-cat! There's no boogie man. Besides, we'll be back long before dark. I promised Mom I'd help her with dinner."

They set off, the crunch of fallen leaves under their boots the only sound breaking the silence. The trail, well-worn and familiar at first, wound its way through the trees, gradually ascending higher into the densely wooded hills. They chatted easily, pointing out interesting rock formations, identifying different types of trees, and generally enjoying each other’s company. They packed their backpacks with just enough snacks – granola bars, trail mix, a couple of apples – and water bottles to keep them going through the hike.

As they walked deeper into the woods, Karen, always drawn to the beauty of nature, spotted something that caught her eye.

“Doug, look! There’s a stream down there. Why don’t we go check it out?” She gestured towards a faint break in the trees, where the glint of water could be seen reflecting the sunlight.

Doug hesitated. He checked his watch. "We're making good time. And you're right, it's beautiful. But it’ll take us off the main trail. Do you think we have the time?" He was starting to feel uneasy.

Karen pouted playfully. “Oh, come on! It’ll only be a quick detour. We can be back on the trail in half an hour, tops. Besides,” she added, her voice laced with playful urgency, “I want to take some pictures of the water cascading over the rocks. Please, Doug? For me?”

He sighed, knowing he couldn't resist her charm. "Alright, alright," he conceded, a smile playing on his lips. "But we stick to the half-hour rule. And we keep an eye on the time. No getting lost in your photography, okay?"

“Deal!” Karen exclaimed, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the stream.

What a bad idea that was. Little did they both know that someone or some thing had been following them, its presence masked by the rustling leaves and the shadows of the trees. Its intentions were far from benign.

The stream was even more enchanting up close. Crystal-clear water tumbled over moss-covered rocks, creating miniature waterfalls and swirling pools. Sunlight danced on the surface, creating shimmering patterns that mesmerized the eye. Karen, true to her word, immediately pulled out her camera and began snapping pictures, capturing the beauty of the scene from every angle.

Doug, however, felt a growing unease. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something felt…off. The air was unusually still, the silence almost oppressive. He strained his ears, trying to hear the familiar sounds of the forest – the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the scampering of small animals. But there was nothing. Only silence.

“Something isn’t right,” Doug said, his voice barely above a whisper. He scanned the surrounding woods, his eyes narrowed.
