About this ebook

The rapid growth of wireless communication technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) has resulted in a massive deployment of low-power electronic devices across diverse environments, including wireless sensor networks, wearable electronics, biomedical devices, and smart infrastructure. These systems require reliable, long-lasting, and sustainable power sources. Conventional batteries suffer from limited lifespan, frequent replacement, environmental concerns, and impracticality in remote or inaccessible locations. To address these challenges, energy harvesting has emerged as an effective alternative, enabling electronic devices to operate autonomously by extracting energy from their surroundings. Among various energy harvesting techniques such as solar, thermal, vibration, and wind energy harvesting, Radio Frequency (RF) energy harvesting has gained significant attention due to the widespread presence of ambient RF signals from cellular networks, Wi-Fi systems, broadcast transmitters, and emerging 5G infrastructure. Unlike other methods, RF energy harvesting is less dependent on environmental conditions, making it particularly suitable for indoor and urban applications and enabling the development of battery-less or self-powered wireless systems. A critical component of RF energy harvesting systems is the antenna, responsible for capturing ambient electromagnetic energy. Microstrip antennas are widely preferred due to their low profile, lightweight structure, ease of fabrication, and compatibility with PCB technology. However, challenges such as low power density, impedance matching, limited bandwidth, and polarization mismatch must be addressed to achieve efficient energy harvesting. This book aims to provide a structured and comprehensive understanding of RF energy harvesting with a strong emphasis on microstrip antenna fundamentals, design techniques, and practical applications. Designed for students, researchers, and practicing engineers, it bridges the gap between electromagnetic theory and real-world antenna design, supporting the advancement of sustainable and energy-efficient wireless technologies
