About this ebook

The Teen Talk Compass is a detailed, practical guide to How to Talk to Your Teen About Difficult Topics for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Why These Conversations Define Your Relationship, The Five Mistakes That Shut Your Teen Down, Prepare the Pathway Not the Script, Listen So They’ll Talk, Sex Bodies and Consent Across the Stages, Drugs Alcohol and Vaping Beyond the Scare Talk, The Window Into Their Emotional World, When the Conversation Derails, Real Talks That Turned the Tide, School Stress Failure and the Future, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Donna Martin is a licensed family therapist, parent educator, and speaker with over twenty years of experience working with adolescents and their families. She holds a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University and has completed advanced training in adolescent development, attachment-based family therapy, and nonviolent communication.

After spending a decade in private practice, Donna founded The Compass Collective, a parenting resource center that offers workshops, support groups, and one-on-one coaching for parents navigating the teenage years. Her work has been featured in *Parenting Today*, *The Family Journal*, and on the podcast *Real Talk, Real Kids*, where she appears as a regular contributor.

Donna lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and two teenagers — who, she is quick to point out, have taught her far more about parenting than any degree ever could. When she is not writing or working with families, she can be found hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, reading literary fiction, or losing gracefully at board games with her family.

*The Teen Talk Compass* is her first book.
