Notes On Politics (or "Political Fragments" ) is a series of short, posthumously published collection of unfinished reflections from his estate by Denis Diderot on a range of political, moral, and institutional issues. Appearing in volume IV of Miscellanea philosophiques (1875), the collection includes scattered notes, touching on topics such as justice, tyranny, governance, social inequality, and the nature of political authority across his writing career. These pieces are informal and fragmentary in form, some of them displaying the background thought processes of published works, and some of them merely stream of consciousness diatribes. Nevertheless, they offer valuable understanding into Diderot's evolving political thought and his Enlightenment-era concerns with reason, liberty, and the moral obligations of rulers and citizens alike across his broad body of religious, political and literary work. These scattered notes, originally penned during Diderot's final years while enjoying the patronage of Catherine the Great in Russia, were discovered among his papers after his death in 1784. Though initially suppressed due to their controversial nature, these fragments eventually circulated through intellectual networks before their formal publication during the post Napoleonic era. The text's fragmented nature shows both Diderot's working method and the dangerous political climate of pre radical France, a collection of incendiary observations designed to evade censorship while preserving radical thought for future generations. Alongside Notes on Politics, the volume provides a new Epilogue by the translator, a glossary of Philosophical Terms used by Diderot, a chronology of his core life and works, and a summary index of all of Diderot's works. The translation of Notes on Politics renders Diderot's eighteenth-century French in contemporary English and situates the work within the intellectual currents surrounding him.
