About this eBook

Deep Work Blocks is a detailed, practical guide to The Time-Blocking Method for Deep Work for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Why You're Always Busy but Never Productive, The Science of Deep Focus, The Time-Blocking Framework, Design Your Ideal Blocked Day, The Seven Time-Blocking Mistakes, Align Blocks with Your Energy, Batch, Group, and Flow, The Distraction Audit, Your Weekly Planning Ritual, The Emergency Overflow Protocol, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Phillip Hogan is a productivity researcher, systems designer, and the founder of Block Labs, a consultancy that helps organizations design workflows that prioritize focused work over reactive busyness. For over a decade, he has studied the intersection of cognitive science, workplace design, and time management — developing practical systems that help professionals and teams produce their best work without sacrificing their well-being.

Before founding Block Labs, Phillip led engineering and operations teams at multiple technology companies, where he observed firsthand how fragmented workflows, constant interruptions, and reactive communication patterns eroded both productivity and job satisfaction. His frustration with standard productivity advice — which often felt designed for an ideal work environment that didn't exist — led him to develop the time-blocking method as a practical alternative rooted in how human attention actually works rather than how we wish it worked.

Phillip's work has been featured in *Harvard Business Review*, *Fast Company*, and *Inc. Magazine*, and he has delivered workshops and keynote presentations for organizations ranging from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 companies. His approach emphasizes sustainability over optimization, arguing that the best productivity system is the one you can maintain for years, not the one that produces the highest output for a few weeks before burning you out.

He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he maintains a strict policy of no more than two deep work blocks per day, two recovery walks through Forest Park each week, and no meetings before 11 AM. This is the first book in a planned series on sustainable productivity systems.
