In all but the most challenging passages, Grimes has intentionally kept fingering to a minimum to allow students to form their own concept of this critical skill. Then, as many bass notes in these pieces are played on open strings, the player must develop a sense of when to selectively damp dissonant tones or observe a rest— exposing and overcoming yet another shortcoming in the education of many guitarists.
Most classic guitar teachers are familiar with the easy didactic studies by Carcassi, Carulli and Giuliani; Favorite Sonatinas offers more highly developed, but not yet virtuoso pieces by the same Italian triumvirate— plus three more composers in a similar vein— promoting confident, enjoyable sight-reading by guitarists of all levels.
David Grimes has performed extensively throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Recent concert tours have taken him to Mexico, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Denmark, France, Norway, Malta, Belarus, Serbia, Montenegro, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. Most recently, he has performed widely with Gregory Newton and Michael Nigro as Trio Camino.
Since 2012 he has acted as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the acclaimed Orange County Guitar Orchestra. The Orchestra's debut recording, Toccata! has been universally praised.
David's edition of Luys Milan: The Complete Fantasias and the celebrated series, Treasures of the Baroque, are published by Mel Bay Publications. His Mel Bay editions of The Complete Sor Studies and The Complete Giuliani Studies are staples of the teaching repertoire. David's own compositions are now being performed by prominent guitarists throughout the world. Three collections of his works, Islands, 24 Preludes and As Ondas Verdes are now published by Editions Doberman-Yppan.
Highly respected as a teacher and coach, David was Director of Guitar Studies at California State University, Fullerton, where he developed one of the nation's leading centers of guitar instruction. For eighteen years David was President of the Guitar Foundation of America and remained as Reviews Editor for the journal Soundboard until 2021.
