About this ebook

Stepping onto the icy sidewalk, she doesn’t see a soul around her. But as she nears the safety of her vehicle, she hears the sound of heavy footsteps. She barely has time to take a breath before a sack is thrown over her head, and her world goes dark…

It’s Christmas in Black Rock Falls, and as the snow falls, schoolteacher Ellie McBride races to the office of Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. She says she escaped being kidnapped. Days later, when a deadly message is written on the whiteboard in Ellie’s classroom, it’s clear whoever took her still has her in his sights.

Jenna is determined to catch the person responsible, and as she watches footage of the attempted kidnapping, something doesn’t add up. Why is Ellie missing from the footage? Did the kidnapper cover his tracks, or is Ellie telling lies about what happened?

Days later, social worker Laney Prescott is reported missing. Worried that it could be the same person, Jenna rushes to Laney’s small home, but she’s already too late. Taking in Laney’s long dark hair, which hangs limp over her face, and the thick cord wrapped around her neck, Jenna fears that a twisted monster is stalking vulnerable women. She vows to hunt them down and bring them to justice.

But as heavy snow begins to block off roads and homes in the small town, the murderer uses the opportunity to take his next victim. A young nurse is missing, and as Jenna closes in on the killer, she finds herself in unthinkable danger thanks to the treacherous conditions. Can Jenna survive and catch the murderer, or will this be her last case?

Snowstorms & serial killers🌨 I am a great fan of this series that pits a small Montana town's law enforcement against an endless stream of serial killers. This plot was good but IMO not quite on par with the other books that I've read in the series. I think the split of the action between competing investigations diluted the urgency somewhat. I did not expect the story to begin with the victim getting away (though under the cloud of uncertainty if her attacker would return). Interesting twists.

I typically enjoy this series but this book was rather slow & boring. I don't understand why Jenna is made out to be such a perfect person and detective. In fact, it gets annoying that her, Kane, & their boys are absolutely perfect in every way. Jenna was an idiot for not believing Ellie & for blaming her. But again..she can do no wrong. Then she runs out onto a frozen lake & is surprised when it starts to crack? Although she is supposedly the best detective who can never relinquish her duties or delegate, she has to ask Kane what to do & how to help herself? Eye roll. 🙄🫪Can we get more books on Beth & Styles? Or maybe a new series with Carter & the team?

It took a long time for the story to get any excitement, lots of characters introduced quickly and together.
