About this ebook

Why does the word atheist carry so much weight in the West, yet barely register across much of East Asia, even where belief in a personal God is far less common? This book traces that gap across philosophy, history, family life, and government policy.

It begins with the word's origin as an accusation inside a Western, belief centered religious tradition, then follows its four century journey from a 1619 execution in France to the twenty first century books that turned atheism into a familiar publishing category. A separate strand traces Buddhist, Confucian, Taoist, and ancient Indian materialist thought, traditions that reached non-theistic conclusions without ever needing anything like the West's confrontations.

From there the book moves to lived experience: why coming out as an atheist carries real social cost in the West, and why a family in Japan or China can combine sincere ritual practice with private uncertainty about its metaphysical claims. A final section compares how governments from the United States to China to India have written belief, and its absence, into law and constitution.

Drawing on history, philosophy, and survey data, the book argues that disbelief is never a neutral, universal category. It takes the shape of whatever belief surrounds it, and understanding a culture's atheists reveals as much about that culture's religion as any study of belief itself.
