Defining Insider Threats: Types, Motivations, and Classifications

Insider threats refer to risks that originate from individuals within an organization who have inside information concerning its security practices, data, or computer systems. These threats can emerge from current or former employees, contractors, or business partners who exploit their access for malicious purposes. Insider threats can be broadly classified into three main types: intentional, unintentional, and collusive threats. Intentional threats involve individuals acting with the intention to cause harm, such as stealing sensitive data or sabotaging systems. Unintentional threats occur when employees mistakenly cause security breaches, often through negligence, such as falling for phishing attacks or misconfiguring security settings. Collusive threats involve individuals working together to breach security protocols, often going unnoticed due to the shared knowledge and mutual trust among the perpetrators.

To further refine our understanding of insider threats, we can classify them based on the motivations behind the actions.
