About this ebook

Parnassus on Wheels is Morley's first novel, about a fictional traveling book-selling business. The original owner of the business, Roger Mifflin, sells it to 39-year-old Helen McGill, who is tired of taking care of her older brother, Andrew. Andrew is a former businessman turned farmer, turned author. As an author, he begins using the farm as his Muse rather than a livelihood. When Mifflin shows up with his traveling bookstore, Helen buys it—partly to prevent Andrew from buying it—and partly to treat herself to a long-overdue adventure of her own.

reading an older book has its charm. it's not as much as the writer of today, with plot twists and hidden messages. as short stories gom this one leaves me fulfilled.

About the author

Christopher Morley (1890-1957) was a multifaceted American writer whose literary contributions spanned novels, essays, poetry, and plays. Born in Haverford, Pennsylvania, Morley was the son of a mathematician and a poet, which perhaps predestined his own eclectic literary path. He graduated from Haverford College and later attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, experiences that deeply influenced his intellectual and literary outlook.Morley is perhaps best known for his novel "Kitty Foyle," which was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, but his influence extends far beyond this single work. He was a founding member of the Saturday Review of Literature and a key figure in the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York City writers, critics, and actors known for their sharp wit and influential commentary. One of Morley's most revolutionary ideas was his advocacy for the literary essay as a form of art. He believed that essays should not merely inform but also entertain and provoke thought, a philosophy that resonated with contemporary writers and continues to influence essayists today. His essays often blended humor with keen social observation, making them both accessible and intellectually stimulating.Morley was not without controversy; his satirical takes on American culture and politics sometimes ruffled feathers. Yet, it is this very willingness to challenge the status quo that endears him to modern readers. His work offers a window into early 20th-century America while also providing timeless insights into human nature and society. In addition to his literary achievements, Morley was a passionate advocate for public libraries and the accessibility of literature for all, a cause that remains relevant in today's discussions about the democratization of knowledge. His legacy is one of wit, wisdom, and a relentless curiosity about the world.
