About this ebook

The Family Smart Home is a detailed, practical guide to A Family Guide to Smart Home Technology for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Know Before You Automate, Make Your Wi-Fi Family-Ready, Pick Your Voice Assistant Without Buyer's Remorse, Smart Speakers and Displays the Whole Family Can Share, Lock Your Front Door with Your Phone, The Security and Privacy Audit, Save on Energy Without Fights About the Thermostat, Lighting That Runs Your Day, Which Kitchen and Laundry Gadgets Earn Their Counter Space, Kid Zones: Smart Tech That Helps, Not Hovers, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Cherise Ann Matz is a technology writer and former educator who has spent more than a decade helping families make sense of the connected world. After a career as a middle school science teacher and later an instructional designer, she began writing about the place where technology and family life meet — the router in the closet, the speaker on the counter, and the thousand small decisions parents make about all of it. Her work has appeared in home technology publications and community education programs, and her popular workshop series, The Smart Home for Nervous Parents, has helped hundreds of families set up connected homes they actually trust.

Matz holds a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in instructional design, and she brings a teacher's instinct to every topic: first make it clear, then make it useful, then make it survivable when things go wrong. Her writing is grounded in a working smart home laboratory of her own — a decidedly imperfect one, she is quick to point out, where a leak sensor under the kitchen sink has saved the floor twice and where the voice assistant still cannot reliably tell the difference between two children with similar names.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her partner and their two children, a dog that triggers the motion sensors daily, and far too many smart plugs.
