About this ebook

Study Smarter with Science is a detailed, practical guide to The Science-Based Study Skills Handbook for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Study Forensics: Why Your Current Habits Are Failing, The Evidence in Ten Principles, Your Personal Learning Profile, Active Recall: The Retrieval Method, Spaced Repetition: Build Your Review Engine, Interleaving: Mix It Up on Purpose, Explain It to Learn It: Elaboration and Self-Explanation, Notes That Work: Dual Coding and Visual Learning, The Perfect Study Schedule, Built by You, Beating Procrastination with Science, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Cheri Kalkowsky is an educator, instructional designer, and speaker who helps students of all ages replace guesswork with evidence-based study techniques. With more than fifteen years of experience teaching and coaching learners from middle school through graduate school, she has made it her mission to translate cognitive psychology research into routines that work in real classrooms, real households, and real schedules.

Her work focuses on the science of learning: how memory is built, why forgetting is normal, and how techniques like retrieval practice, spacing, and self-testing can transform struggling students into confident, independent learners. She has led workshops and training sessions for schools, universities, and parent organizations, and has designed academic-support programs used by thousands of students.

In addition to her writing and speaking, Cheri has spent her career in and around the classroom, where she continuously tests new strategies against the most demanding audience there is: students facing real deadlines, real exams, and real pressure. She holds a master's degree in education with a focus on instructional design, and she remains a lifelong student herself.

When she is not teaching or writing, Cheri is usually deep in a research paper, learning a new language, or working through an aggressively optimistic reading list. She believes that the best learning strategies are the ones that survive contact with an ordinary week — and that anyone, with the right techniques and a little consistency, can learn to study smarter.
