Charles Wilson is a productivity researcher, workplace performance consultant, and the founder of Deep Track Consulting, a firm that helps organizations design workflows that support sustained cognitive focus. Over the past fifteen years, he has worked with more than sixty companies — including three Fortune 500 firms, multiple high-growth startups, and several academic research institutions — to redesign their work environments, meeting cultures, and communication norms around the neuroscience of attention.
Wilson's interest in focus and productivity emerged from his own experience as a software engineer in the early 2010s. Despite working long hours and consistently meeting deadlines, he found himself producing work of diminishing quality and feeling increasingly depleted. The conventional productivity advice available at the time — wake up earlier, drink more coffee, use a better to-do list app — failed to address what he eventually recognized as the root problem: the structural incompatibility between modern knowledge work environments and the human brain's cognitive architecture.
This realization led Wilson to leave his engineering role and pursue graduate research in cognitive psychology at the University of Washington, where he studied under attention researcher Dr. Sarah Kornfeld. His thesis, *Environmental Determinants of Focused Work in Open-Plan Offices*, was published in the Journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology and has been cited in subsequent workplace design guidelines adopted by several major technology companies.
After completing his graduate work, Wilson founded Deep Track Consulting and began developing the Focus System, drawing on cognitive science research, his own experience as a knowledge worker, and iterative testing with his consulting clients. The system was originally developed as a set of internal protocols for his clients, but demand from individual professionals led to its expansion into the comprehensive framework presented in this book.
Wilson's writing has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today, and Inc. Magazine. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences on productivity, workplace design, and cognitive performance, and his workshops have been attended by professionals from more than thirty countries.
He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he maintains his own daily focus practice, hikes the Pacific Crest Trail when possible, and is currently developing a companion course to the Focus System for teams and organizations.
