The chapter ends with Chen leaving the scene as police swarm the building, and Dai Fu—the goddess who loves him—arriving at a seaside villa, embracing him from behind with the question: "What are you thinking?"

About the author

CATHERINE BRUNS is a writer, book designer, and artist whose work inhabits the unsettling gap between word and echo, rule and grotesque enforcement. Drawing inspiration from the stark, haunting traditions of folktale and gothic bureaucracy, Bruns constructs multi-room narratives that challenge readers to embrace disorientation, question authority, and persist through ambiguity.
