About this ebook

The Irregular Income Playbook is a detailed, practical guide to Budgeting for Freelancers with Irregular Income for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Why Your Budget Keeps Blowing Up, The Baseline Budget: Your Non-Negotiable Number, Know Your Real Income, The Allocation Method: Percentage-Based Budgeting, The Freelance Salary: Pay Yourself a Steady Paycheck, The Tax Reserve: Stay Ahead of the IRS and Your State, Feast Months and Famine Months, The Expense Audit, How Big Should Your Cushion Be?, Sinking Funds: Smoothing Out the Bumps, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Brian McCann is a financial educator and the author of The Irregular Income Playbook. He spent fifteen years as a freelance writer and marketing consultant, riding the cycles every independent worker knows well: banner months that felt like wealth, dry months that felt like failure, and a tax bill that always arrived at the worst possible moment. After a particularly brutal slow season nearly wiped out his savings, he started building the system described in these pages—a baseline budget, an income-smoothing owner's draw, and a set of sinking funds that turned an unpredictable income into a reliable monthly paycheck.

The system worked so well that fellow freelancers began asking for his spreadsheets, which grew into the Freelancer's Money Toolkit, a free budgeting suite now used by thousands of self-employed workers. He teaches budgeting workshops at co-working spaces, freelance conferences, and small business groups, and his writing on money and independent work has appeared in newsletters and publications serving freelancers.

Brian lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and their rescue dog. Between client seasons he hikes the Cascades, tinkers with spreadsheets, and continues to be surprised by how quickly a good system makes a bad month feel ordinary. He writes from a simple conviction: you shouldn't have to hate your budget to have one.
