Queen's Gambit brings Margaret Harkness back to foil an attempt to kill Queen Victoria at her Diamond Jubilee ceremony, giving Margaret a starring role. This time her story is deepened and her detective skills growing, although her partners from the first volume aren't there to help for most of the tale. Instead she joins forces with a London police detective and some very good humor comes from that. The denouement is quite satisfying and one hopes Margaret will continue fighting crimee and solving mysteries in more stories to come. I rate this 4.5 out of 5 stars, mostly for a couple of small errors that few would notice.
About the author
Bradley Harper is a retired US Army Colonel and pathologist who has performed over two-hundred autopsies and some twenty forensic investigations. A life-long fan of Sherlock Holmes, he did intensive research for this debut novel, A Knife in the Fog, including a trip to London's East End with noted Jack the Ripper historian Richard Jones. Harper’s first novel was published in October 2018 and was a finalist for a 2019 Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America for Best First Novel by an American Author.
