About this ebook

An indomitable young woman fights to escape her past and rejoin humanity in an intimate cat-and-mouse tale of revenge and redemption, from the author of The Origin of Iris

“A white-knuckle trip through a gritty, frightening, and all-too-plausible postapocalypse.”—Paul Tremblay, author of The Pallbearers Club

Elka barely remembers a time before she knew Trapper. She was just seven years old, wandering lost and hungry in the wilderness, when the solitary hunter took her in. In the years since then, he’s taught her how to survive in this desolate land where civilization has been destroyed and men are at the mercy of the elements and each other.

But the man Elka thought she knew has been harboring a terrible, monstrous secret. And now that she knows the truth, she may be his next victim.

But Trapper’s taught her far too well. Elka, too, is a predator, and she’s going to fight and survive—no matter what the cost.

It is a coming of age book about a girl named Elka who is essentially a feral child after a big storm, is then taken in by a murderous mountain man, and spends majority of the book running from her past and searching for the family she has always wanted. I got this book for Christmas and as an avid reader, I was kind of disappointed. The underlying messages of the book are good, but it never really stuck to a genre or a theme long enough to make it something that kept my attention or gave me a feeling of closure or resolution. The way the book is written is unique and effective but at times annoying (Elka refers to a war as the "DamnStupid" and uses broken, sort of country, sort of Canadian, uneducated narrative). The time period of the book is hard to place as there are times when things are very futuristic and Sci-Fi but also it refers to things that sound very Victorian. It was not a bad book, certain parts and descriptions were great. I think overall though - it just wasn't my cup of tea. Everything about the book just felt mediocre to me and as an avid hunter at many times I just rolled my eyes. Had it not been a gift, I would of been disappointed for buying it.

Beautiful story of redemption, told from the POV of a lost child, born into the Wild, raised by Evil. Creative prose and well-written. Fast-paced and an easy read, but well-deserving of the 2009 Booker.

Harrowing tale. Writer really made characters come alive.
