August Strindberg (1849–1912) was Sweden’s foremost playwright and novelist and one of the towering figures of world literature. Röda rummet (The Red Room, 1879) is widely regarded as the first modern Swedish novel — a caustic satire of Stockholm society that made Strindberg both famous and notorious overnight.
