About this ebook

The Science Fiction Universe Builder is a detailed, practical guide to Building Your Own Science Fiction Universe for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Foundation: Choosing Your Subgenre, The Physics That Govern Everything, Lessons from the Master Builders, Designing Alien Life and Ecology, Languages and Communication Barriers, Forging Empires and Political Systems, Character Design in a Strange World, The Worldbuilder's Mistake Audit, Weaving Lore into Plot and Dialogue, Forging Galactic History and Timelines, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Armando Cura is a speculative fiction author and writing craft educator with over fifteen years of experience developing immersive narrative worlds across novels, tabletop roleplaying games, and interactive fiction. He is the author of six science fiction novels, including the *Orphaned Colonies* trilogy, which was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award, and the standalone novel *The Last Surveyor*, which won the Locus Recommended Reading List for debut science fiction. His short fiction has appeared in *Clarkesworld*, *Lightspeed*, and *Asimov's Science Fiction*, among other publications.

Cura's approach to worldbuilding is shaped by his background in anthropology and systems design. He holds a degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Buenos Aires, where his research focused on how communities construct shared narratives of origin and identity—work that directly informs his methods for building fictional cultures from the ground up. Before writing full-time, he spent a decade designing narrative systems and campaign settings for the independent tabletop RPG industry, including the award-winning *Signal to Noise* setting for the Stars Without Number system.

As an educator, Cura has taught worldbuilding workshops at Clarion West, the Odyssey Writing Workshop, and the Rio de Janeiro International Literary Festival. He created and hosts *The Worldbuilding Studio*, a podcast that examines the craft techniques behind iconic fictional universes from *Dune* to *The Expanse* to *Ancillary Justice*. His newsletter, *The Worldbuilder's Notebook*, reaches over eighteen thousand subscribers with weekly craft essays, prompts, and case studies.

Armando Cura lives in Montevideo, Uruguay, with his partner and two spoiled cats. He is currently at work on a new novel set in the same universe as *The Last Surveyor*, returning to the rogue planet Ephemeris and the surveyor who refused to leave it.
