About this ebook

This new translation of Aristotle's Politics is a model of accuracy and consistency and fits seamlessly with the translator's Nicomachean Ethics, allowing the two to be read together, as Aristotle intended.

Sequentially numbered endnotes provide the information most needed at each juncture, while a detailed Index of Terms indicates places where focused discussion of key notions occurs. A general Introduction prepares the reader for the work that lies ahead, explaining what sort of work it is and what sort of evidence it relies on.

Somewhere between Plato's idyllic Republic and the grity world of real-politik lies Aristotle's Politics. Unlike the Republic, the Politics is in fact achievable, albeit it never has been achieved and likely never will be. Yet all great philosophy sets up a noble target, one that should, if nothing else, induce us to deeper thought and consideration. Herein lies nothing radical or revolutionary. Instead, in keeping with Aristotle's focus on the mean and moderation, he describes the base tendencies of both rich and poor, the origins of conflict between them, and a mature and measured solution to balance the interests of all involved. Some arguments may seem antiquated and the world has certainly changed but human nature remains the same. C.D.C. Reeve's stellar introduction and notes bring Aristotle alive in a fascinating way. way.
