Elara Voss has been promised to Death since infancy. The kingdom calls the ancient betrothal sacred, dresses her in funeral silk, and praises her courage as though a child could consent to becoming the price of peace. On the morning of the rite, Elara expects a monster beyond the Veil. Instead, the figure summoned before the court gives her an ordinary name: Dorian Blackwell. Dorian is feared as Death, Keeper of the Last Gate, yet he is bound by the same ancient system that has treated Elara as an offering. Their meeting cracks the legend open. The more Elara investigates the Seventh Mortal Accord, the more she discovers that the story used to justify generations of sacrifice has been shaped by power, fear, and missing truths. Dorian wants her freedom even when that freedom could take her away from him. Elara wants the right to choose without turning love into another prettier cage. Together, they cross the broken boundaries between the living world and the Umbral Realm while priests and old laws fight to restore an arrangement neither of them freely made. The Veil is failing, the dead are restless, and the kingdom believes only an obedient bride can repair the damage. Elara intends to prove that mercy built on sacrifice is only another kind of curse. If the old covenant survives unchanged, both bride and Death may remain prisoners of a promise neither chose.
