The Portuguese arrived in the 1490s and were driven out in the late 17th century. In 1890, Germany and Great Britain divided the region, with Great Britain taking the north and the Germans taking the south. The British established the East Africa Protectorate in 1895, which became a colony in 1920 and named Kenya after its highest mountain.
