Introduction: The World Under the Flame
Mount Veyra is a huge active volcano in the eastern desert. Smoke always rises from its top, and red fire shines through cracks in its sides. Most travelers stay far away because they believe nothing can live inside such a dangerous mountain.
However, a secret kingdom called Cindervale exists deep beneath the volcano. Its people live in homes carved into black stone and shining crystal caves. Bridges cross rivers of hot lava, and golden lanterns light the underground streets. The people mine magical materials such as moonstone, sun crystal, ember stone, and red gold. These minerals provide heat, light, power, and wealth.
At the center of the kingdom stands the Obsidian Palace. Deep inside it sits Avarok, a powerful creature known as the Hell Brute. Four magical chains hold him to the Ember Throne.
The royal advisers tell everyone that Avarok once tried to destroy Cindervale. They claim the chains protect the kingdom from its anger. For many years, the people believe this story and fear him.
Fourteen-year-old Imani Vale is different. She is a miner’s daughter who asks questions and notices things that others ignore. When Mount Veyra begins shaking and the chains start breaking, Imani becomes suspicious.
She discovers the advisers secretly packing food, treasure, and magical minerals so they can escape. Then she finds an ancient document that reveals the truth.
Avarok is not the kingdom’s enemy. The chains force him to absorb the volcano’s dangerous power and stop it from erupting. He has protected Cindervale for more than two hundred years.
Now the chains are failing, the advisers are abandoning the people, and the volcano may erupt. To save her home, Imani must enter the forbidden palace, meet Avarok, and help him control his power. She must also convince the adults to listen to her before it is too late.
