About this audiobook

Written over the course of Leskov's career, each story in The Enchanted Wanderer elucidates the very essence of the human condition; themes of love, despair, loneliness, and revenge are explored against the backdrop of nineteenth-century working-class Russia. Leskov deftly layers social satire and subtle criticism atop myth and fable, resulting in a richly entertaining collection.

I hate to admit it, but I find this collection to be a bit of a drag. The enchanted wanderer seems mostly a collection of ideas for longer stories that never ended up getting written. With the notable exceptions of Lady Macbeth, Spook and one other I can't remember, it's mostly a slog. If Lescov's stories really are a window into Russian life at the time... well let's just say I'd much prefer to live in Tolstoy's world.
