The Expedition of Humphry Clinker
About this audiobook
The Expedition of Humphry Clinker is an epistolary novel that follows the comedic and chaotic travels of the eccentric Bramble family across 18th-century Britain. Narrated through letters written by various family members, including the sharp-witted spinster Lydia Melford and the grumpy yet lovable Matthew Bramble, the journey reveals vivid portraits of English, Welsh, and Scottish society. Amid romantic entanglements, misadventures in health spas, and encounters with rogues and fools, the family’s newly hired servant—Humphry Clinker—emerges as a quiet but pivotal figure. Smollett masterfully blends satire, social commentary, and character-driven humor in this lively travelogue, offering both a critique of British manners and a heartfelt exploration of family, love, and redemption. A classic of 18th-century fiction.
