About the author

JON WHITTLE earned a PHD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1999, then joining the NASA Ames Research Center leading AI-driven projects in space technologies and civil aviation. Transitioning into academia, he taught software engineering and AI across the US, UK, India, Germany and UAE, building a distinguished career in leadership roles. From 2020 to 2025, he was Director of CSIRO’s Data61. A trusted advisor to government and industry, he was instrumental in developing Australia’s National AI Centre and frequently consults on AI and sits on the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Governance of Innovation and Technology Panel. His contributions to leadership and innovation earned him an Executive of the Year award from CEO Magazine. Recognised as a thought leader in AI and digital transformation, Jon is a sought-after keynote speaker and media commentator, reaching over 4 million people annually. His podcast, CSIRO Presents Everyday AI, was shortlisted for an Australian Podcast Award, and he co-authored the book Responsible AI: Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy AI Systems.
