About this audiobook

Every book tells a story. This one tells a secret.

A young bookbinder begins a hunt for the truth when a confession hidden beneath the binding of a burned book reveals a story of forbidden love, lost fortune, and murder.

Lilian ("Lily") Delaney, apprentice to a master bookbinder in Oxford in 1901, chafes at the confines of her life. She is trapped between the oppressiveness of her father’s failing bookshop and still being an apprentice in a man’s profession. But when she’s given a burned book during a visit to a collector, she finds, hidden beneath the binding, a fifty-year-old letter speaking of love, fortune, and murder.

Lily is pulled into the mystery of the young lovers, a story of forbidden love, and discovers there are more books and more hidden pages telling their story. Lilian becomes obsessed with the story but she is not the only one looking for the remaining books and what began as a diverting intrigue quickly becomes a very dangerous pursuit.

Lily's search leads her from the eccentric booksellers of London to the private libraries of unscrupulous collectors and the dusty archives of society papers, deep into the heart of the mystery. But with sinister forces closing in, willing to do anything for the books, Lilian’s world begins to fall apart and she must decide if uncovering the truth is worth the risk to her own life.

I really liked the premise, a mystery involving a series of books with hidden messages all coming from a bookbinder no one has heard of suddenly being unearthed by a down on her luck book clerk hoping to unravel their secrets. While the premise for The Bookbinders Secret had me hooked, the execution of the actual tale fell flat. The pacing for this book was slow. As much as I love the buildup of suspense for the sake of a good mystery, the pacing of this had me considering a DNF. The only reason I didn't was probably because I could crank up the speed of the audiobook in the slowest sections, had this been a physical copy I probably wouldn't have finished it. The love triangle felt forced and rather out of place. Both of Lily's potential love interests felt flat and her emotions/relationship to them just felt odd. I would have preferred to see more of Lily's character growth and her unraveling of the mystery without the love affairs.

1901 Oxford: Bookbinder Lily discovers a hidden letter revealing a decades-old mystery of love, fortune, and murder. Her search for answers plunges her into a dangerous world of unscrupulous collectors, forcing her to risk everything to uncover the truth. This engrossing mystery is fast-paced and atmospheric. Lily is a relatable heroine, and I look forward to reading more in this series. The audiobook narration is entertaining. Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC. This is my honest review.

I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Olivia Vinall. The narration was wonderful and easy to understand. This book was a fast-paced story of mystery and intrigue centered around books. Lily is a bookbinder who is given a partially burned book. Hidden in it, she discovers handwritten pages that lay out a love story from fifty years previously. She soon discovers that there are other books and more hidden pages...and she's not the only one interested in them. She is approached and threatened by a thug. She must find the rest of the books and turn them over...or there will be consequences. I really loved the descriptive writing in this book. It was so good that the atmosphere and locations were easily pictured and added to the reading experience. I felt Lily's fear and anguish right along with her. I will definitely look for more by this author. Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the copy. All thoughts are my own.
