Holy Bible: English King James Version

The King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Bible

The King James Version, also known as the Authorized Version, stands as a monumental achievement in English literature and religious history. Commissioned in 1604 by King James I of England and published in 1611, it was the work of approximately 47 scholars drawn from the Church of England. Their task was to produce a new, authoritative translation that would resolve discrepancies among earlier English versions and serve the unified worship of the realm.

The translators worked primarily from the original Hebrew and Greek texts, consulting previous English translations like the Tyndale Bible and the Bishop's Bible. The result was a masterpiece of Early Modern English prose, renowned for its majestic rhythm, poetic cadence, and profound dignity. Its language, rich in imagery and resonance, has deeply influenced the development of the English language, embedding countless phrases and idioms into common speech.

For nearly four centuries, the KJV was the standard Bible for most English-speaking Protestants. Its sonorous phrases shaped the worship, thought, and imagination of generations. While modern scholarship and discoveries of older manuscripts have led to more contemporary translations, the King James Version endures. It remains a unparalleled literary treasure, a pillar of the Christian heritage, and a timeless testament to the power of the Word, "a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).
