About this audiobook

"Debra Newell's journey, her tale of survival and her openness in sharing her story, is awe-inspiring." —ERIC BANA

Debra Newell is nothing if not a survivor. By the time she met John Michael Meehan online, she had lived through a near-fatal childhood illness, an attempted rape in her twenties, the traumatic death of her sister at the hands of her brother-in-law, and multiple failed marriages. But despite those tragedies, she seemed to have it all: adoring children, a successful business, and a fabulous penthouse apartment.

Still, to her, there was something missing: the blinding, all-consuming love she first read about while passing time in her childhood sickbed. And she thought she found that love for real with John Meehan.

Debra's story is one of trauma, heartbreak, and deception. But it is also a relatable, inspirational, and hopeful story of forgiveness and, most of all, love: the boundaries children and parents cross to protect and save the people they love; the love one must find for oneself; and the ways the illusion of love can be used to manipulate and harm.

Overall I enjoyed the book, she has had a lot of therapy from therapists who have worked hard to ensure she knows she was a victim which is very supportive of other victims but then she undermines that when she says study after study have shown victims of traumatic events remember every detail clearly, study after study actually shows that frequently the opposite happens as well. I was raped and I in fact do NOT remember the date or the day of the week, I do not have perfectly clear memory of the event and I have heard many stories of the same and I know I was also a victim! One rape victim tried to memorize every detail she could of her rapist's appearance only then to identify the wrong man. (DNA didn't match) Fair warning, she's not a great reader, which really surprised me for how smart she is, but she pauses in weird places, however, her voice is super pleasant to listen to, and that alone makes me understand why anyone would want to listen to her all the time!

Great book. Really important true account of how easily a sociopath can manipulate smart and good people.
