HVAC Systems in Smart Energy Cities

Cities are undergoing a profound transformation. Energy systems, once centralized and predictable, are now becoming dynamic, data-driven, and highly interconnected. At the center of this evolution lies the HVAC system—no longer just a building service, but a critical component of urban energy infrastructure.

In smart energy cities, HVAC systems are directly linked to digital networks, renewable energy sources, smart grids, and district energy systems. They are expected not only to provide thermal comfort but also to actively participate in energy balancing, carbon reduction, and demand flexibility. This shift requires engineers, designers, and operators to rethink traditional approaches and embrace integrated, intelligent, and adaptive systems.

This book, HVAC Systems in Smart Energy Cities, is written to bridge the gap between classical HVAC engineering and the emerging world of smart urban energy ecosystems. It explores how HVAC systems interact with modern city infrastructure, how digital technologies reshape their operation, and how sustainability goals redefine their design.

Rather than treating HVAC as an isolated discipline, this book positions it within the broader context of smart cities—where buildings, energy networks, transportation systems, and data platforms operate as one unified system.

The objective is simple: to provide a practical yet forward-looking understanding of how HVAC engineering is evolving in the age of smart cities.
