About the author

Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English novelist whose sharp wit, keen social observation, and masterful prose have secured her place among the most beloved writers in the English language. Born the seventh of eight children in a Hampshire rectory, she began writing as a teenager and went on to produce six major novels — including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion — all published anonymously during her lifetime. Her stories of courtship, family, and the quiet dramas of English country life are celebrated for their irony, psychological depth, and gentle subversion of the manners and marriage markets of Regency England. Though she died at only forty-one, Austen's influence on literature is immeasurable, and her novels remain as witty, incisive, and quietly radical today as when they first appeared.
