GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMPS: FOR RESIDENTIAL RETROFITS

The ground beneath your feet holds more energy than you might imagine — enough to heat and cool your home year-round, with remarkable efficiency and minimal environmental impact.

For decades, geothermal heat pumps were the domain of new construction on large lots, expensive to install, and out of reach for most homeowners. That reality is changing rapidly. A new generation of compact, modular, and smarter geothermal systems is making this technology accessible to millions of existing homes — the retrofits that represent the largest untapped opportunity in residential energy efficiency.

This book is for the homeowner who has wondered whether geothermal is finally possible for their house. It is for the HVAC contractor navigating a rapidly evolving product landscape. It is for the energy auditor advising clients on decarbonization pathways, and for the policymaker designing incentive programs to accelerate adoption.

We will walk through the science without oversimplifying it, explore modern technologies that are rewriting the installation playbook, and give you the financial tools to evaluate whether geothermal makes sense for your situation. Along the way, we will hear from homeowners who made the leap and the lessons they learned.

The energy transition is underway. Ground-source heat pumps are one of its most powerful tools. This is your guide to putting that power to work.
