The rain hammered against the windows of Grind Coffee as Maya Chen balanced three laptops, two file folders, and a steaming cup of her usual vanilla latte. Her marketing presentation was due in exactly forty-seven minutes, and she still needed to review the final slides before her meeting with the boutique hotel chain that could make or break her small consulting firm.
She maneuvered through the crowded coffee shop, her eyes scanning for an empty table, when disaster struck in the form of a tall stranger backing away from the counter. The collision was inevitable – Maya's latte flew through the air in a perfect arc, landing squarely on the man's pristine white button-down shirt.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry!" Maya gasped, watching the brown stain spread across his chest like a badge of her clumsiness. Her laptops clattered to the floor, and papers scattered in every direction.
The man turned around, and Maya found herself staring into the most striking pair of green eyes she'd ever seen. Dark hair fell across his forehead, and despite being drenched in coffee, he had the kind of classical features that belonged in a Renaissance painting. He looked down at his ruined shirt, then back at her, and to her surprise, he started laughing.
"Well, that's one way to make an introduction," he said, his voice carrying a slight accent she couldn't quite place. "I'm Aleksandr. Aleks to my friends, and apparently to strangers who baptize me with coffee."
