About this audiobook

A heart-wrenching standalone novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, We Burned So Bright follows an elder gay couple on an end-of-the-world road-trip.

"[Kirt] Graves brings a steady, thoughtful performance that perfectly matches the novel’s reflective tone... Graves creates an experience that feels intimate and immersive without tipping into sentimentality.” — Booklist (Starred Review)

“Narrator Kirt Graves shows remarkable emotional versatility in his depictions of hope, desperation, apathy, and acceptance...This highly emotional audiobook won’t leave listeners dry-eyed.” — Kirkus

The road stretched out before them. No other cars, just the headlights on the blacktop. Above, the cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky....

Husbands Don and Rodney have lived a good long life. Together they’ve experienced the highest highs of love and family, and lows so low that they felt like the end of the world.

Now, the world is ending for real. A rogue black hole is coming for Earth and in a month everything and everyone they’ve ever known will be gone.

Suddenly, after 40 years together, Don and Rodney are out of time. They’re in a race against the clock to make it from Maine to Washington State to take care of some unfinished business before it’s all over.

On the road they meet those who refuse to believe death is coming and those who rush to meet it. But there are also people living their final days as best they know how—impromptu weddings, bright burning bonfires, shared meals, and new friends.

And as the black hole draws near, among ball lightning and under a cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky, Don and Rodney will look back on their lives and ask if their best was good enough.

Is it enough to burn bright if nothing comes from the ashes?

This novella unfolds slowly & requires patience. Prepare for heartbreak & horror, but also sweetness as Don & Rodney make a road trip at the end of the world, sharing some of their personal history, queer history, & touching moments with those they encounter on their journey. This was a little darker than I prefer, but I really loved Don & Rodney. After 40 years, they are still totally in love. Some of their encounters were truly disturbing, but others were heartwarming. Great narration.

The first half dragged for me and felt kind of aimless at times. I think that meandering, vignette-y feeling was intentional; it's just not my cup of tea. But the last chunk hit me right in the feels, and the ending managed to feel deeply satisfying despite the literal end of the world.

A lot of folks said T.J. Klune's We Burned So Bright is super sad, and said I'd need tissues, but I found it really heartwarming and uplifting. I'm so glad Don and Rodney had such a lovely life together, and that they met so many interesting folks on their journey. The details of their son are sad, but I'm glad they tried so hard to give him a full and normal life. The audio version of We Burned So Bright is beautifully performed by Kirt Graves.
