"Voiced by [Avi] Roque, Alex proves an endearing and capable storyteller whose military discipline and down-to-earth manner help them keep their head amid the book's bizarre circumstances."— Library Journal

Alex Easton does not want to visit America.

They particularly do not want to visit an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia with a reputation for being haunted.

But when their old friend Dr. Denton summons them to help find his lost cousin—who went missing in that very mine—well, sometimes a sworn soldier has to do what a sworn soldier has to do...

This is the first book in the Sworn Soldier series that I've done on audio instead of reading. No offense to Avi Roque, but their narration style didn't work for me. Their cadence had a sing-song quality, so I felt like I was listening to a children's story. The narration lacked any sense of seriousness or urgency. Separating the listening experience from the story is difficult. The content wasn't as dark as the two previous books. I missed the edginess and sense of dread. I loved the first two books, and I love Kingfisher’s writing in general, but this one was a disappointment. I definitely recommend reading over listening. *Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook download.*

This shows T. Kingfisher's quirky humor & disturbing imagination. I love the established characters in this series, as well as the new characters we meet in this book (human & otherwise). There’s a lot of humor, but it is spooky with some violence & gore. Some of the imagery really made my skin crawl. Bonus points for LGBTQ rep & characters with PTSD. I highly recommend this series for fans of weird fiction & gothic horror. They’re perfect for spooky season! Love the narration by Avi Roque.

Fun! Short read but the Easton Alex books are always a treat and pallette cleanser for the longer arduous novels
