About this audiobook

What happens when a machine begins to think for itself? And what happens when it develops a temper? In Ambrose Bierce’s remarkable science fiction horror story Moxon’s Master, an eccentric inventor is convinced that intelligence is not exclusive to human beings. His theories sound outrageous, but something strange is happening inside his private workshop. There are unexplained noises, signs of violence, and a growing suspicion that his experiments have gone far beyond ordinary mechanical invention.

As a violent storm approaches, an unexpected discovery raises a terrifying possibility. Moxon has created something capable of performing a task that requires intelligence. But the machine’s behavior suggests it may possess something far more troubling than the ability to follow instructions. Could a mechanical creation experience frustration? Could it become angry with the person who built it? And what happens when its inventor discovers that winning is not always the safest outcome?

First published in 1899, Moxon’s Master is an extraordinary early example of science fiction confronting the possibility of artificial intelligence. Long before electronic computers, modern robotics, or today’s debates about intelligent machines, Bierce imagined a mechanical creation whose behavior raises unsettling questions about the relationship between an inventor and his invention.

Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 in Meigs County, Ohio. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, experiencing combat at battles including Shiloh and Chickamauga. Those experiences influenced his fiction, particularly his famous Civil War stories.

After the war, Bierce established himself as a journalist and literary critic in San Francisco. His newspaper columns appeared in publications including the San Francisco Examiner, and he became notorious for his sharp wit, savage criticism, and dark humor.
