About this audiobook

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The book in which Nietzsche wrote "God is dead" — and, four hundred aphorisms later, first posed the eternal recurrence: what if a demon told you that you must live this life again and again, unchanged, forever? Would you curse him, or call him a god?

Published in 1882 and expanded in 1887, The Gay Science is Nietzsche at his most exuberant and least systematic. The title comes from the troubadours' art of song, and the book means it: this is philosophy written as a celebration of intellectual health after long illness, in short bursts that turn from art to science to morality to women to the Greeks, often within a page. It contains his clearest statements on truth as a human invention, on cheerfulness as an achievement rather than a temperament, and on what it would cost to live without the consolations he thought Europe had already lost.

It is also where Zarathustra first appears, in the closing pages, before walking off into his own book. For many readers it is the best door into Nietzsche: funnier than the others, less shadowed by the collapse to come, and wholly characteristic. This is an unabridged recording of a fresh modern translation.
