THE CALENDAR SHE HID: A COUNT SHE WOULDN’T SHARE

Denise keeps the calendar facedown under the soap, graphite marks she will not read aloud. The rust sweater still carries a pale thread no wash has fully surrendered. Micah’s hand had been on her wrist in the dark of the rented split-level, pulse against pulse, the word don’t already too late to be a stop. She had guided him. He had stayed. Morning put a paper towel in the trash and a lie in each of their mouths, and the lies did not match.

He is her husband’s son by a marriage eleven months old, twenty-two, sleeping on the pullout because the warehouse cut his hours and the lease died with the paycheck. Carl is on the road, then home earlier than the text, clap on the shoulder, a bid in his mouth. Denise manages the portal, the lunches, the cuts. The step-role is what makes refusal expensive. Micah folds cash under the mail so he will not be only a cost. She wants the weight of her body handled, not invoiced. He wants to be let past the management. Neither wants the same loss.

The dryer knocks. A bathroom latch catches. She locks her ankles and chooses the risk over the explanation. A text from a shift she does not ask about. A finish she denies them both. Carl’s tissues. Carl’s ceiling. A laugh in the yard while a hand hovers at her cuff and does not land.

Late sits in a drawer that sticks. Saying it would give Micah a claim and Carl a price. The truck ticks in the drive. The side gate claps. Who comes back, and what the count is worth, she has not decided to spend.
