Scared and pregnant, Corrine fled with her mother and brother to a small Oregon town along the Pacific Coast. To protect her child from the stigma of being a bastard, they lied and said she was a widow.

Forrest Ryder, the traveling preacher, felt it was his duty to marry her in order to help her and her family since they were struggling financially. Shortly after exchanging vows, he went to tie up the loose ends in his traveling ministry.
