About this audiobook

The steamy mythology of Neon Gods meets the dark academia of The Coven in this dark contemporary romance from USA Today bestselling author S.A. Barnes.

"[Ava] Lucas' narration enhances Jo's cynicism as she navigates political intrigue...She easily differentiates characters, and her male voices are delightfully sensual." —Kirkus

Jocasta’s carved out a normal life for herself—well, as normal as she can get with a name like Jocasta and being the one and only child of Death.

It's her senior year at Beecher University, but Jo is lonely. She feels guilty about using her friends to feed her fatal magic, especially when she’s feeding on a certain friend’s frequent disappointments. Then there’s Carter, the smart and sexy guy she was—is—half in love with. It’s messy, but safe.

When Devon shows up, things get a lot more complicated. He’s a descendent of an Old One, just as Jo is. He knows she’s Death’s daughter, which means this isn’t an accident. He has come to Beecher for her: the Old Ones are making moves, and Death’s just announced Jo as his successor.

Her safe bubble is about to burst—but Jo will do anything to claim what’s rightfully hers. Even if it means enlisting Devon’s help.

Thank you macmillan audio for the advance audiobook. This one was a little hard for me. It started off very strong with deaths daughter hiding in a college setting just using her gifts enough to get by and survive. When a mysterious being with powers kinda like hers starts to stir trouble up. A murder next to her dorm window happens and all chaos is let loose. I loved the mysterious aspect and her trying to figure out basically who was framing her but what slowed the book down for me was at the beginning when the murder happened she was getting all caught up in feelings for a boy she sort of likes but they need to be friends or whatever. It was constant and a little annoying because she literally was all most charged with murder. And possibly someone framing her. bruh, I wouldn't be worried about a crush in that situation but idk maybe that just me. I'm not sure why that annoyed me but it did just enough I wasn't fully emerge in the story.
