About this audiobook

“Told in alternating perspectives divided into 'Me,' 'You,' 'Us,' and 'Them' sections, the narrations by Baxendale and Glover perfectly match the slow build of the story. Both capture the determination, guilt, and duplicity of the characters as the plot twists.” —AudioFile

Award-winning author of New York Times bestselling breakout novel (and hit Netflix show) Behind Her Eyes returns with a haunting Gothic novel about a house—and a marriage—gone terribly wrong.

After an accident that nearly kills her, Emily and her husband, Freddie, move from London to a beautiful Dartmoor country house called Larkin Lodge. The house is gorgeous, striking—and to Emily, something about it feels deeply wrong.

Old boards creak at night, fires go out, and books fall from the shelves, and all of it stems from the terrible presence she feels in the third-floor room. But these things happen only when Emily’s alone, so are they happening at all? She’s still medically fragile; her postsepsis condition can cause hallucinatory side effects, which means she can’t fully trust her own senses. Freddie doesn’t notice anything odd and is happy with their chance at a fresh start.

Emily, however, starts to believe that the house is being haunted by someone who was murdered in it, though she can find no evidence of a wrongful death. As bizarre events pile up and her marriage starts to crumble, Emily becomes obsessed with discovering the truth about Larkin Lodge.

But if the house has secrets, so do Emily and her husband.

And they live here now.

This program features multicast narration, including by actors Jamie Glover (The Crown) and Helen Baxendale (Friends).

Super fast chapters make it easy to read, even if it was slower at times especially in the beginning, but ultimately it just didn’t suck me in the way I expected it to. It was soaked in Poe references, which I did appreciate, but sometimes it seemed as though the story wasn’t Sarah’s own. I didn’t feel super connected to the characters. Paranormal is very hit or miss for me, but I typically enjoy Sarah’s books so I figured why not. And on that note - I didn’t dislike this, by any means. It’s definitely an ‘it’s me, not you’ situation here. I will say the second half was much better than the first for me. I was much more invested as we were coming to our conclusion & had to compulsively listen.

WE LIVE HERE NOW is all creepy-house atmosphere. I liked how it played out, especially with the reveal when we found out why it was all happening. I also liked the nods to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven. I didn’t like either main character. They deserved each other. I felt the story dragged a little in parts, but overall I enjoyed it. The audiobook is well done. Helen Baxendale and Jamie Glover, the narrators, embraced the characters’ personalities. I believed they were Emily and Freddie. *Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook download!*

Wow this book was a journey. Neither of the main characters are likable, which is definitely intentional but it took about half the book to realize this. There was a slow building realization that I did not like these characters, then a slow building reveal that these characters are not good people, which was an unsettling experience. The set up at the beginning of the book made me think I was in for an eerie setting or haunted house experience but it turned out to be more of a psychological thriller. I feel like there was something more I wanted from this book but I can't quite put my finger on what, maybe more depth to the story or the characters in some way. Still an enjoyable and unsettling read, would recommend.
