Most Kung Fu books either drown you in history you can't use or hand you techniques with no explanation of why they work. This one refuses to choose.
Shaolin Kung Fu: The Original Training Manual for Power, Speed, and Agility is a complete, start-to-finish training manual for anyone who wants to learn authentic Shaolin Kung Fu properly — from the documented history of the Shaolin Temple and the truth behind the Bodhidharma legend, through stance training, breathing, flexibility and conditioning, all the way to striking, kicking, footwork, the Five Animal Styles, sparring, your first full form, and an introduction to traditional weapons.
Written by Bruce Chung Liao, a martial arts teacher with more than thirty years as both a student and instructor of Shaolin methods, this book was built to do what a good teacher does: tell you exactly what to look for, explain why it matters, and correct the mistakes beginners make before they become habits.
Inside this Kung Fu training manual, you'll learn the real, documented history of the Shaolin Temple and where popular legend and verified fact actually diverge; how to build a stable, powerful stance from the ground up, the foundation every strike and kick depends on; breathing and internal strength training explained in plain, practical terms rather than mysticism; safe, structured flexibility and conditioning work for lifelong training, not just early enthusiasm; hand strikes, blocks, kicking methods, and footwork, taught the way a teacher would correct you in person; the Five Animal Styles, Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon, and what each one actually trains; sparring principles and practical self-defence grounded in realistic scenarios rather than cinema; your first complete traditional form broken down step by step; an introduction to the staff and the straight sword; and how to build your own training plan across weeks, months, and years.
Whether you're a complete beginner with no access to a local school, a student looking to deepen what you already train, or simply curious about where Kung Fu really comes from, this manual is written to stand on its own — clear enough for a first-time reader, detailed enough for a serious one.
No fluff. No filler history. No Hollywood shortcuts. Just a properly researched, properly taught path from your first stance to your first form.

Bruce Chung Liao began training in Southern Praying Mantis as a boy in Kowloon before travelling to Henan Province in his early twenties to study Shaolin methods more seriously, spending the better part of four years there across several extended visits under a number of different teachers. He has taught Kung Fu in London for over two decades, beginning in a borrowed church hall in Walthamstow and later establishing a training space of his own, and has spent more than thirty years as both a student and a teacher of this tradition. He lives in London, where he continues to teach, train, and, when time allows, argue amiably with fellow practitioners about which version of which form is genuinely correct.
