About this audiobook

From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore: A magnificent coming-of-age story steeped in nostalgia, “a masterly novel” (The New York Times Book Review) blending the music, the mood, and the ethos that were the sixties with a young man’s hopeless and heroic first love.

Now with a new introduction by the author.

Toru, a serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. As Naoko retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman.

Stunning and elegiac, Norwegian Wood first propelled Haruki Murakami into the forefront of the literary scene.

This is a lovely story of a ~20-year old Japanese man's experiences in the late 1960s through 1970 or so. It focuses on his love for a girl who develops mental illness, as well as other trists and relationships. Midori and Reiko are both great lady characters that the protagonist interacts with. The story is largely devoid of the surrealism that I've encountered in some of the author's other works. In its place, it gets pretty spicy at times, so be careful who else can hear the story. There are also at least three people who take their own lives, which could be a sensitive topic. My only real complaint is with the audiobook narrator. He emotes well and is mostly great, but he doesn't know Japanese pronunciation, so he mispronounces Midori and several other names. Get past that as I did, and you'll have a great time with this book.
