About this audiobook

The classic that brought pranayama to the West — restored, examined, and made safe to practise.

In 1904 a former Philadelphia lawyer writing as "Yogi Ramacharaka" published a slim manual that became one of the most influential books on breathing ever written. The Science of Breath is still in print more than a century later. It taught generations of Western readers the Complete Breath, rhythmic breathing, and the idea that the breath is the bridge between body, mind and spirit.

It also got a great deal wrong, and it carried almost no warnings.

This annotated edition gives you the complete original text, carefully restored, with a commentary after every chapter that asks four questions: What did he claim? Where did it come from? What do we now know? And what should you actually do with it?

The answers draw on classical yoga and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, on the Theosophical and New Thought movements that shaped Atkinson's world, on the Western esoteric tradition, and on modern research into breathing, the nervous system and heart-rate variability. Some of his claims hold up remarkably well. Some have been overturned. A few turn out to be more interesting than he knew.

Inside you will find:

The complete 1904 text of all sixteen chapters, with transcription errors corrected

Sixteen in-depth commentaries connecting Atkinson's teaching to yogic, esoteric, Christian contemplative and scientific traditions

The true story of William Walker Atkinson, the lawyer behind more than a dozen pen names and around a hundred books, and the Philadelphia and Chicago milieu that produced him

The Practice, Rebuilt: the book's exercises modernised and arranged by need, from settling quickly to walking, voice and pain

The Thirty Days: a guided, day-by-day programme that takes you from first awareness of the breath to the meditative practices of the final chapter

Clear safety guidance the original never gave, including which practices to leave out and why

A guide for yoga teachers on using the book in classes, four-week series and teacher training

Whether you come to the breath as a yoga practitioner, a teacher, a student of the esoteric traditions, or simply someone looking for a calmer and clearer mind, this edition lets you read a founding text of modern yoga with open eyes, and put the best of it into practice.

Slow beats deep. Rhythm beats force. Begin with the breath you already have.

About the author

William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932) was an American attorney, editor and writer who became one of the most prolific authors of the New Thought movement. Born in Baltimore, he practised law in Pennsylvania until a breakdown in health around 1900 led him to the ideas of mental healing and the power of the inner life. He went on to edit the magazines Suggestion and New Thought and to write close to a hundred books under more than a dozen names, including Yogi Ramacharaka, Theron Q. Dumont and Magus Incognito. His Ramacharaka books helped introduce yoga philosophy and pranayama to Western readers, and The Kybalion is widely attributed to him. Many of his works remain in print today.

Michael Shenher is a writer, certified yoga teacher, NLP trainer, hypnotherapist and coach whose work explores the shared ground beneath the world's contemplative traditions. His interests span breathwork, meditation, the inner symbolism of sacred texts, and the New Thought and yogic lineages that shaped modern spirituality. He is the author of more than twenty books, including The Alchemy of Flow, Take My Yoke and The Mind Shift: A Roadmap to Personal Liberation, and the editor of Yogic Philosophy Examined, a series of annotated editions of classic yoga texts.
