Local First AI: Building a Home Setup That Runs Real Models Without the Cloud

You've used ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. You've built workflows around them. But what happens when the service goes down, the price goes up, or your data becomes part of their training pipeline? This book is for people who want a different path: running powerful AI models on their own hardware, with complete privacy and zero ongoing cost.

The open-source ecosystem has matured to the point where the gap between cloud-based AI and local AI has narrowed from a chasm to a crack. This practical guide shows you exactly how to build a local AI system that works for your specific needs, from selecting the right hardware to running advanced models and connecting them to your daily tools.

Inside, you'll discover:
• What hardware you actually need to run useful models (it's less than you think)
• How to install and run your first model in under 30 minutes
• Advanced model management techniques for multiple workflows
• How to build a local AI server and connect it to your tools
• Retrieval-augmented generation with your personal documents
• How to run vision and image models locally
• Privacy, security, and data sovereignty considerations

You don't need a data center in your basement. You need a reasonably modern computer, a willingness to experiment, and the patience to tweak things until they work. This book gives you everything else.
